issue news MYSORE, INDIA-Steps will be taken to sell the 30 million kg. of low-grade tobacco grown in 1998 in the Mysore, Shimoga, and Hassan districts to Russia, according to a Times of India report. Vice-Chairman of the Tobacco Board Chowdaiah said that the erratic rainfall and non-availability of sulphate of potash resulted in more low-grade Virginia tobacco, of which there is not much demand. "A total of 30 million kg. of low-grade tobacco has been grown, and there is another 30 million kg of the same quality grown last year lying in the godowns of Andhra Pradesh," said Chowdaiah. According to president of the Karnataka State Tobacco Growers?Forum S.M. Anantharamu, Russia is an important market for low-grade quality tobacco. Tobacco fetches Rs. 50 billion in excise duty and about Rs. 5 billion in foreign exchange to India. |
