Indonesia tobacco area to increase

JAKARTA-Area planted to leaf tobacco in 1998 is expected to slightly increase to 216,000 ha, according to the USDA-ERS. However, leaf tobacco production will decrease by 1.1% to 147,000 tons due to unexpected rains during the planting season. Flue-cured tobacco imports, which account for 67% of imported leaf tobacco, will reach 25,500 metric tons, down 15%. Domestic consumption of leaf tobacco will total 174,100 tonnes, down 11% due to a decrease in demand for cigarettes.
