Hauni appointments

    HAMBURG - The supervisor board of Hauni Maschinenbau AG in Hamburg appointed Detlef Behrend to the position of deputy member of executive board with as of March 1. In this capacity, Behrend will be responsible for sales and marketing, the area previously directed by Wolfgang Jeglitza who will now concentrate on strategic planning and structural modifications initiated at Hauni Maschinenbau AG.
    Johannes Witt has vacated his post as managing director at Universelle Engineering U.N.I. GmbH in Schwarzenbek to join Hauni Maschinenbau AG as deputy board member responsible for customer service and manufacturing a new Board unit.
    In addition, at the end of the first quarter of 1999, Earl Kornhurst, operations director, will be returning to the USA as president of Brown & Williamson's U.S. domestic business, reporting to Nick Brookes, regional director, America-Pacific. John Jewell is currently senior vice president, operations, including research & development, at B&W and will succeed Earl, having joined B&W in 1972 as a research engineer. John has wide experience and has been a member of the global operations team for the past three years.


DIMON names new president, chief operating office

    DANVILLE, VIRGINIA - DIMON Incorporated named that Brian J. Harker, age 48, to the position of president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. He has also been elected to the company's board of directors. Harker has served as DIMON's executive vice president and chief financial officer since October, 1996. In his new position, Harker will continue to be based at the company's corporate headquarters in Danville.
    As president of DIMON, Harker replaces Albert C. Monk III, age 59, who has been elected to the position of vice chairman of DIMON's board of directors. In his new position, Monk, who has been president since the formation of DIMON in 1995, will focus on customer relations and business development.
    Harker was born in Zambia in southern Africa and was educated in Zimbabwe and the U.K. He relocated to the U.S. upon joining DIMON's predecessor company, Monk-Austin, in 1990 and moved to Danville in 1996.
    DIMON also announced the appointment of James P. Cooley to senior vice president - chief financial officer, and Ritchie L. Bond to senior vice president and treasurer. Both Cooley and Bond, long-time employees of DIMON and one of its predecessor companies, Dibrell Brothers, have held senior finance positions within the company. Most recently, Cooley had been the Company's senior vice president and treasurer, while Bond served as CFO of Florimex, the floral subsidiary of DIMON which was sold in 1998. (john)


Vietnam Tobacco Association new appointments

    HO CHI MINH CITY - Last February Vietnam Tobacco Association (VTA) held its Second General Assembly (third tenure) in Ho Chi Minh City. The Assembly passed its operational line for 1999 with following paramount objective:
    Development of locally produced products that have competition advantage through promotion to encourage consumers; development of cigarette production must be deeply attached to expansion and improvement of raw tobacco areas; d Creation of favorable conditions for possible export and replacement of imported items; and preparation of proper policies and measures to overcome all arising difficulties and challenges and to adapt to new situation.
    Le Dinh Thuy asked to resign office as VTA chairman. To note his great contribution to the Vietnam tobacco industry, the assembly invited Thuy to act as the honorary chairman of VTA. The assembly believed that with such status Thuy will contribute more abundantly, more positively, and more efficiently to the development of the Vietnam tobacco industry to correspond with development tendencies of the world tobacco industry.
    Nguyen Van Gia, former chairman of the board of Vietnam National Tobacco Corporation (Vinataba) and former vice chairman of VTA, was also invited to act as advisor of VTA.
    The general assembly elected some members as a complement to its new board. The new board includes: Nguyen Thai Sinh, chairman of VTA, and chairman of the board of Vinataba; Nguyen Xuan Hoang, vice chairman of VTA, director-general of Khanh Hoa Tobacco Enterprise; Pham Kien Nghiep, vice chairman & secretary-general of VTA, secretary-general of Vinataba; Le Viet Duoc, board member of VTA, vice director general of Vinataba; Pham Van Hiep, board member of VTA, director of Dong Nai Tobacco Company; Nguyen Triet, board member of VTA, director of Saigon Cigarette Factory; and Bui Duc Thanh, board member of VTA, director of Hai Phong Tobacco Company. Board appointment's at BAT

    LONDON - Once the proposed manager with Rothmans is completed later in the year, Tony Jones will join the management board of British American Tobacco as regional director for Africa.
    Jones is currently regional chief executive-Asia for Rothmans, having joined the company in 1968. His experience with Rothmans includes being managing director of Rothmans Exports Limited, general manager-north for Rothmans of Pall Mall International, and managing director of Rothmans of Pall Mall Malaysia.
    Following completion of the merger, the enlarged British American Tobacco will be managed in six regions, which take into account market groupings, cultures, consumers, tastes and distribution channels.
The regions and their respective regional directors will be as follows:
    Africa: covering all markets in the African continents (including North Africa). Regional director: Tony Jones (currently regional CEO Asia, Rothmans International);
    America-Pacific: including the U.S., Japan and Korea. Regional Director: Nick Brookes (currently regional director, America-Pacific, British American Tobacco);
    Asia-Pacific: covering markets such as Asia-Pacific North, Indochina, Singapore, Regional director: Tony Johnston (currently regional director, Asia-Pacific, British American Tobacco);
    Europe: covering over 50 markets, extending from Russia to Portugal. Regional director: Paul Adams (currently director, Europe, British American Tobacco);
    Latin America and Caribbean: includes Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Regional directors: Antonio Monteiro de Castro (currently regional director, Latin America and the Caribbean, British American Tobacco);
    MESCA: (Middle East, South, and Central Asia), extending from the Middle East across to Bangladesh and from Central Asia down to Sri Lanka. Regional director: Dick Green (currently regional director, AMESCA (Africa, Middle East, South & Central Asia), British American Tobacco).
    Commenting on the proposed appointment of Jones to the management board of the enlarged company, Martin Broughton, chairman of British American Tobacco, said:
"The merger with Rothmans will make AMESCA our biggest market in terms of volume, so it will make good sense to divide the responsibilities for it in this way. I warmly welcome Tony Jones to the management board to take charge of the Africa region, where our ability to get the best out of both businesses will be vital for the future." (john)
