In early March, Japan Tobacco announced it would acquire the non-U.S. tobacco business of RJR Nabisco in a US$8 billion deal. RJR Nabisco at the same time announced it would also spin-off its tobacco business in the U.S., effectively forming three separate companies.Industry personnel expressed surprise at the deal.

China: Why the Crackdown on Smuggling is Working This Time
China is the largest cigarette producer in the world, with annual production reaching 33.5 million cases (one case = 50,000 cigarettes). Sales of smuggled foreign cigarettes through street vendors are falling, and sales through legal counters are rising due to China's anti-smuggling drive which began last July. m7.gif (922 bytes)

America's New Controversial Export: Tobacco Lawsuits
Give an inch, take a yard. The old cliché applies to the opponents of America's tobacco business. In November 1998, in what is known as the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA), the four largest cigarette manufacturers - Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds, Brown & Williamson, and Lorillard - reached agreement with eight American participating State Attorneys General to pay a total of $206.3 billion over 26 years to settle all 40 Medicaid suits that had been filed, as well as cases that had yet to be filed. m7.gif (922 bytes)
