issue news TOKYO - Philip Morris began test marketing its flameless smoking system in some 20 tobacco shops in Osaka in January. The system, dubbed "digital smoking," involves heating cigarettes inside a special lighter that comes with an inner electric heater. Philip Morris said the flameless cigarette, which does not require burning the tobacco, enhances the flavor and aroma of the tobacco by allowing the heated air to penetrate through individual cigarettes. The system, which produces no ash, also greatly reduces smoke and minimize the odor that tends to permeate clothes, the company said. The specially made cigarettes sell for £¤300 for a pack of 20, while the lighter, which is battery-charged, sells for £¤5,000. The test sale will be the second of its kind worldwide, following one that took place in Richmond, Virginia, last August. Philip Morris said it would put the product on trial on the Japanese market for six to 12 months before deciding its sales strategy. |
