Philippines
According to the National Tobacco Administration (NTA), tobacco production in the Philippines has increased by 6.3% compared to last crop year 2009-2010. The increase in production, that saw the crop reach 78.4 million kg, is also an improvement on NTA’s own projections of 77 million kg. It’s also a 10.9% improvement in terms of value: from Php4.846 billion (US$ 111.6 million) last year to Php5.373 billion (US$ 123.8 million) in crop year 2010-2011.
The increase in tobacco output is widely attributed to less rain than in the previous crop year.
During a recent press-conference, NTA administrator Edgardo D. Zaragoza still insisted that the government was not going to revise its final projection of 80 million kg from crop year 2010-2011, even if production might end up somewhat higher.
According to Zaragoza, the main markets for the exports of Philippine unmanufactured tobacco are the US, Belgium, South Africa, Korea and Malaysia, while the country’s manufactured tobacco products mainly go to Thailand, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.
