Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) c.e.o. Dr. Andrew Matibiri recently announced the start of mop up sales on September 20 at all trading floors. The sales are scheduled to run every day until all the delivered tobacco is sold. He also indicated that some farmers who had been left with surpluses should use the opportunity to bring their crop to the trading floor.
Over 130 million kgs of flue cured tobacco valued at US$358 million were sold at four tobacco floors in Zimbabwe this year.
It is traditional to leave a period when no crop related to tobacco grows in the field after the tobacco crop is harvested to break pest and disease cycles, so farmers were warned not to leave tobacco stalks in their fields.
The planting of the 2011/2012 irrigated tobacco went on without incident and there are indications that more tobacco has been planted compared to the same period last year.
