Electric Dreams The E-Cigarette Challenge

By Heneage Mitchell

E-cigarettes are getting a lot of publicity at the moment – and not all of it bad.

Essentially a battery-operated nicotine delivery system that looks like a cigarette, E-cigarettes are gaining market share rapidly in the US and parts of Europe as smoking bans and health concerns attract consumers to the new technology.

The US is currently the largest market for E-cigarettes (neighboring Canada has banned their sale). The EU is close behind. These two areas are currently where most of the activity is taking place. In many other markets, E-cigarettes are either banned currently, or the market has yet to be developed. In Asia, China, which is the leading producer of E-cigarettes, has seen the product catching on to some degree, while Japan is seen as a potentially important market in the future.

Thailand’s Oriental Powerhouse

E-mail Print PDF

By Heneage Mitchell

Thailand’s tobacco crop caters primarily to its domestic market. Thailand Tobacco Monopoly (TTM), which is a state-owned arm of the Ministry of Finance, controls over 70% of the retail cigarette market and buys much of the domestically produced FCV for its manufacturing requirements.

But several thousand tons of burley and oriental tobacco are also produced for export. Thai tobacco exports used to be stronger in the days when there were over 10 exporters, but because of convergence and consolidation, there are now far fewer players.

Three companies dominate the leaf tobacco export industry in Thailand: Alliance One International (AOI), Premium Tobacco (who’s Thai operations were featured in this magazine in 2006) and Adams International Limited (AIL), who are partnered with AOI. Premium concentrates on burley, handling around 8,000 tons annually from a total burley harvest of around 40-45,000 tons. AOI exports about 20,000 tons and TTM takes the rest.

BAT’s recent acquisition of Bentoel has piqued the interest of many in the industry, but as of now, the impact has generally yet to be felt as BAT carefully considers its strategy.

During this assessment period, no, or relatively minor changes, are expected in Bentoel’s day-to-day activities until BAT has thoroughly examined al its options. However, there is a palpable mood of excitement at Bentoel’s corporate headquarters these days: a sense of optimism pervades the atmosphere. More than Just Paper and Ink TANN Philippines is a Multi-Solution Facility

E-mail Print PDF

By Heneage Mitchell

Just around the corner from Philip Morris’ impressive Batangas production facility is another, somewhat smaller, but no less impressively appointed facility serving the tobacco industry.

TANN Philippines decision to place their regional hub in the same industrial park was no doubt influenced in part by gaining an important customer as an immediate neighbor. But it was mostly, as Oliver Carsi-Cruz, the company’s affable general manger, points out, because of the Philippine’s unique geographical, cultural and social benefits.

"Here, we are strategically located to supply North, South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East," said Carsi-Cruz. "Some of our products end up in Africa too. Logistically, the Philippines has an advantage. It’s easy to get things in and out of the country, and we are relatively close to all of our major customers. Add to this a motivated, highly skilled, English-speaking work force and the Philippines is clearly an ideal place to locate a technologically advanced production facility such as TANN’s."
