In the wake of new sweeping regulation of tobacco and tobacco related products that is currently being drawn up in the United Kingdom, electronic cigarettes have received a nod of approval from a seemingly unlikely source - the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).
The venerable institution has expressed its support for this innovative category of products stating that they did not believe that e cigarettes should be removed from the market. They further expressed their view that competition in the field of nicotine replacement therapy may have beneficial consequences for tobacco consumers and society at large.
In a letter addressed to the UK’s Medicines and Health Regulation Authority, the RCP said: “It is now clearly established that NRT is effective, it should not be necessary to demonstrate cessation efficacy for new NRT formulations. Doing so would simply perpetuate the current market dominance, high prices, and poor product profile of the established major producers.”
