The Australian government has decided to set aside a proposed ban on nicotine e-cigarette imports less than three months before the ban was to come into effect.
Instead, it established a Select Committee on Tobacco Harm Reduction to launch an inquiry into vaping and establish clear e-cigarette laws.
Health minister Greg Hunt had proposed the ban in June last year, which was then pushed back for six months after facing pushback from the public and even members of his own party, with many questioning whether the ban would cause those who had switched from smoking cigarettes to vaping to switch back.
Senator Matthew Canavan and MP George Christensen started a petition to overturn the ban and instead legalize and regulate nicotine.
