The Bangladesh government significantly raised the price of tobacco products, including cigarettes and bidi, in its proposed budget in a bid to restrain tobacco consumption and surge revenue collection.
In the proposed budget, the price for a 10-stick packet of premium segment cigarettes increased from BDT105 to BDT123, of which the government will get 65% as supplementary duty, 15% as VAT, and 1% as health development surcharge. Every 10 sticks of high segment cigarettes are priced at BDT93, up BDT18 from the previous price.
If the budget is implemented, the retail price for a 20-stick premium segment cigarette pack will increase to BDT246 form BDT210, and a 10-stick medium segment cigarette packet at BDT63, which is currently priced at BDT48.
