CAMBODIA
The Ministry of Commerce said Cambodia’s 2017 dry tobacco leaf exports to Vietnam reached more than 1,000 tons valued at more than US$2 million. This is a 24% increase from 2016.
Ministry spokesman Long Kemvichet said data showed Cambodia exported a total of 1,200 tons of tobacco to Vietnam, worth US$2.37 million. In 2016, 989.75 tons were exported, valued at US$1.91 million.
The two countries agreed in 2016 on preferential duties for agriculture products crossing their shared border. Under the agreement, Cambodia was allowed to export 3,000 tons of dried tobacco to Vietnam duty-free for one year starting in 2016.
It is unclear if the agreement will be renewed for this year. Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture revealed that last season Cambodia produced 9,089 tons of tobacco, an increase of 37% compared with the previous season.
