TURKEY
Effective since December 5, 2018, all tobacco products in Turkey are subject to plain packaging laws.
According to the new laws, tobacco products shall be marketed “in plain and standard packaging” based on uniform design including brand typeface, font and size, pack color, warning messages, and other mandatory texts, phrases, and images. Brand names will be written only on one side of the pack, covering no more than 5% of the side. Also, no brand logo or symbol will be allowed in the new designs.
Dr. Pavel Ursu, World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Turkey said, “ Turkey has been a leading country in tobacco control over the last decade, thanks to its sustained political commitment,” commented. The Parliament’s vote to pass the amendment for the plain packaging of tobacco products is another important milestone in Turkey’s efforts to fight the global epidemic of tobacco use.”
Under the new law, advertisement outlets for tobacco products are also restricted, and the display of consumption of such products on television, in films, on the internet, and on publicly accessible social media platforms prohibited.
